Smoking twigs, a sooty pot, and slow-to-arrive heat: these are classic signs of incomplete wood combustion. When cooking outdoors, this is no minor detail. You burn more fuel, get less power, and spend more time managing the fire than preparing your meal.
The good news is that an efficient fire doesn't necessarily require a lot of wood. What it primarily needs are the right conditions: dry fuel, clear draft, appropriate load, and sufficient airflow. Here's how to transform a sluggish fire into a lively, stable, and useful flame.
What is Incomplete Wood Combustion?
When wood heats up, it releases combustible gases. For these gases to burn properly, there must be enough oxygen and a sufficiently high temperature. If either of these is lacking, some of the gases and particles won't burn completely. This is incomplete combustion.
It produces more smoke, soot, and black deposits. It can also release carbon monoxide, a dangerous and invisible gas. This is another reason to cook only in an open, well-ventilated area, never in a closed tent, vehicle, or shelter without proper ventilation.
